Africa Transition Index
The Africa Transitions Index (ATI) is a data-driven initiative developed to enhance understanding of political transitions and governance dynamics in Africa, with a focus on fostering inclusive and sustainable democratic governance. The ATI measures governance through three core domains: Rule by the People, Rule of Law, and Enabling Environment. These domains capture democratic participation, institutional strength, and factors influencing transition risks, such as state capacity, economic stability, and social unrest.
The ATI dashboard provides a detailed overview of 27 indicators across 50 African Union countries, designed to inform policy and offer early warnings on political transitions. It presents trends and findings within three key domains, giving you an in-depth look at each country’s performance. The dashboard includes a political context map, highlighting upcoming elections and historical demonstrations, along with comparisons of indicator performance against regional averages. It also tracks trends over time, providing a comprehensive view of governance dynamics and transition risks across the continent.

The ATI Early Warning Opportunities Platform offers a comprehensive understanding of the political landscape across Africa by providing insights into governance trends and the broader enabling environment. By examining historical domain trends and the correlation between governance indicators and transition factors, it helps assess whether a country is likely to experience a positive or negative political shift. Updates on political violence data provide timely insights into emerging trends, while the risk outlook table displays both stable and at-risk governance indicators, highlighting areas of political stability and potential vulnerabilities in the transition process.
